"The idea is to bring the whole community together in events like this to celebrate what we have here in Reston," Supervisor Walter Alcorn said in August 2025. He was speaking at Hunters Woods during National Night Out, which also served as the official kickoff of a new neighbor-led effort called One Hunters Woods. This October is the first Halloween since that launch. South Reston's calendar this month has two anchors. One is Reston Association's ticketed programs at Walker Nature Center. The other is the coalition's free afternoon at Hunters Woods Plaza.
Neither one is run by a shopping center or a business district. They're run by community organizations, and the two keep different schedules. At Walker, the deadlines come early and matter more than the event dates. At Hunters Woods Plaza, the main event is free and falls on Halloween itself. A South Reston family that knows which is which this week can fit in nearly everything on the list.
Most of the Halloween programs at Walker Nature Center, 11450 Glade Drive, require registration and are priced in Reston Association's two-tier member and non-member format. As of Oct. 10, here is how the next three weeks line up.
| Date | Event | Where | Cost | Registration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri., Oct. 16, 6:30–7:30 p.m. | Creepy Critters Campfire | Walker Nature Center Fire Ring | $8 RA member, $10 non-member | By Oct. 13 |
| Sat., Oct. 17, 10:30–11:30 a.m. | Creatures of Halloween | Walker Nature Center | $8 RA member, $10 non-member | By Oct. 14 |
| Tue., Oct. 20, 10–11 a.m. | Creatures of Halloween, repeat session | Walker Nature Center | $8 RA member, $10 non-member | By Oct. 14 |
| Fri., Oct. 23, 5:45–8:30 p.m. | Halloween House & Trick-or-Treat Trail | Walker Nature Center | $15 RA member, $20 non-member | Link posted |
| Sat., Oct. 24, 5:45–8:30 p.m. | Halloween House & Trick-or-Treat Trail | Walker Nature Center | $15 RA member, $20 non-member | Listed as "coming soon" |
| Sat., Oct. 31, noon–3 p.m. | One Hunters Woods: RCC Spooktacular | Hunters Woods Plaza, 2310 Colts Neck Road | Free | None listed |
Two of those deadlines fall next week, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Creepy Critters Campfire closes registration on Oct. 13, three days before it starts. Creatures of Halloween closes on Oct. 14, which is six days before its Tuesday repeat session. Creatures of Halloween is aimed at ages 3 to 5. Both sessions have the same content, so the Tuesday morning slot gives a second chance to families who can't make Saturday.
The Halloween House & Trick-or-Treat Trail is the event most South Reston households will recognize. Reston Association describes a nature-themed trail plus a "decked-out Halloween House" with a cast of characters that includes some real animals, along with apple cider, popcorn and games. The listing says it is "NOT a horror show or a haunted house," though it does use sound and light effects. Children and adults are encouraged to wear non-scary costumes.
The event comes with a few practical rules:
The trail runs two nights this year, Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24. When we checked, the Friday listing had a registration link and the Saturday listing still said "coming soon." Check with Walker Nature Center at (703) 476-9689 ext. 3 or [email protected] for the latest.
The event has a long history. Back in 2014, Reston Now called the Halloween House a "favorite annual tradition" and reported that the Friday night had sold out that year. That's one year's report and doesn't show a pattern. Still, with a registration link already live for Friday, there's little reason to wait.
One more thing about Walker this month: Reston Association's annual invasive-plant removal began in early October and runs through November across nine worksites. One of them is the south side of Walker Nature Center, so work crews may be visible on the grounds during visits.
The Halloween 2026 option at Hunters Woods Plaza has a different origin. The One Hunters Woods: RCC Spooktacular runs Saturday, Oct. 31, from noon to 3 p.m. at 2310 Colts Neck Road. It's free, and Reston Community Center is the organizer.
It's part of One Hunters Woods, an initiative of the Hunters Woods Neighborhood Coalition. RCC says the initiative is meant to bring recreational, cultural and community events to Hunters Woods Plaza. The event listing names the partners behind it:
Congregations, a condominium association, a county office and a nonprofit housing provider all sit on one list. That's what sets the plaza's events apart from the nature center's. The Reston Connection's coverage of the 2025 kickoff describes a noon-to-2 p.m. gathering in front of Hunters Woods Fellowship House and Reston Community Center. In his remarks, Alcorn listed "our wonderful restaurants and vendors, Fellowship House, and our communities of faith" among the things the initiative aimed to celebrate.
In its first year, the initiative's calendar filled up steadily. RCC's Winter/Spring 2026 guide listed a Family Game Day on Jan. 10, Valentine Arts & Crafts on Feb. 14, a Hunters Woods Walking Group starting March 1, Green Reston on April 11, a Neighborhood Clean Up on April 25, and on May 9 both a performance by Zack Smith & The Mardi Gras Kings and Reston Water Safety Day. The Fall 2026 guide continued with Turley the Magician on Sept. 26 and a Neighborhood and Stream Clean-Up on Oct. 3. That puts the Spooktacular near the end of a full year of plaza programming, not at the start of something new.
The Spooktacular happens next to a shopping center that changed owners last winter. FFXnow reported in January 2026 that Edens sold Hunters Woods Village Center to an affiliate of Pennsylvania-based J.C. Bar for almost $30.5 million. At the time of the sale, the center was 88% leased, with nearly 14,900 square feet vacant. The new owner lists Safeway as the anchor, and its tenant roster includes Dunkin', Jersey Mike's and Kung Fu Tea, along with Wells Fargo and Xfinity. The owner's leasing page still advertises several small-shop suites, and the October 31 calendar at the plaza comes from the coalition.
For families, that keeps planning simple. A noon-to-3 Spooktacular leaves room for a Safeway stop or a Kung Fu Tea run on the same trip, with the evening free for trick-or-treating on your own street.
One event outside South Reston fits the same Saturday as Creatures of Halloween. Reston Association's free Howl-O-Ween Dog Festival runs Oct. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Brown's Chapel Park baseball fields, 1525 Brown's Chapel Road. RA asks people to register. A morning at Walker with a preschooler and an afternoon at Brown's Chapel with the dog fills that Saturday.
Neither hub shuts down after Halloween. Here's the order things happen in:
RA's November listings don't yet give prices or registration details for the Walker programs. If the October pattern holds, sign-ups will close several days before each session. Checking the Reston Association calendar early in the month is the easiest way to avoid missing one.
